Interview Lighting
for TV, Documentary
and Branded Films
Learn multiple different approaches to lighting interviews, for 1 or 2 cameras
The ability to light for interviews is one of the most in-demand skills for shooters working at all levels nowadays. It can be a resource-heavy exercise using multiple lights and grip equipment, or a simple - but beautiful - choice of placing a subject next to a window and using natural light.
Available time, amount of equipment and size of budget all play a part in the look that you’re going to be able to create - even the size, shape and character of the room that you’re filming in have a huge impact on whether or not you’re going to be able meet those client - or director - expectations.
I have years of experience of lighting interviews for TV, documentary features, branded content and corporate films. I understand the many limitations that are often placed on self-shooters - lack of time, lack of money, lack of equipment! - and have many times had to create a beautiful (or at the very least - acceptable!) looking interview from very difficult practical circumstances.
Given that interview lighting is such a broad topic and can involve so much equipment (or not!), I prefer to discuss your specific needs with you first. From there I build a 1 or 2-day course (almost always incorporating camera training too) that gives you the specific experience that you as a shooter need.
(If you’re working with an in-house lighting kit of two or three very specific lights, there possibly isn’t much point in delivering a lighting course that works with twice or three times that amount of gear!)
As always, if I feel that the equipment you have to hand is not going to cut the mustard in terms of what you’re trying to achieve, then I’ll of course advise on that, and see how we can get there in the most cost effective way possible.
Get in touch to discuss how I can get you or your crew trained up to the level you need.
